Most controllers have motor drivers built in. The exception is the CAN_MCU, which is designed to work with separate CAN driver modules — useful when motors sit far from the controller or when you are building a distributed system.

Why encoders change everything

Without encoders, the controller estimates motor position from the IMU alone. That works, but it drifts, needs recalibration, and struggles when the camera is knocked or the platform manoeuvres hard.

Magnetic encoders such as the AS5048 give absolute angular position on every axis. The result is faster startup with no calibration dance, recovery from physical disturbance, better performance near the gimbal limits, and noticeably smoother tracking. For anything carrying an expensive camera or a survey sensor, encoders are not an upgrade — they are the baseline.

Encoder support requires a compatible controller. The Extended and Pro versions handle it; check before ordering, or ask us.

Controllers

UAV camera and sensor payloads

Airframes vibrate and manoeuvre, which is harder on a stabilisation system than handheld use. A two-IMU configuration — one on the camera platform, one on the frame — lets the controller separate aircraft motion from camera motion. Encoders are strongly recommended.

Inspection and survey platforms

Energy, infrastructure and construction work needs stable sensor orientation for accurate imaging and usable data. Precision matters more than cinematic smoothness, which puts encoders and a controller that supports them at the centre of the build.

Film and broadcast

SimpleBGC has been the backbone of custom cinema rigs for years, in handheld and boom-mounted systems worldwide. The Pro and Extended controllers drive cinema-grade payloads when properly configured.

Robotics and ground platforms

About BaseCam Electronics

BaseCam Electronics, based in Riga, Latvia, develops gimbal stabilisation controllers, motion control systems and sensor modules. Its SimpleBGC platform — often still called AlexMos after the original design — became the de facto standard for custom camera stabilisation and is deployed in systems worldwide.

Controllers are configured through the SimpleBGC GUI, available for Windows, macOS, Linux and Android, with upgradable firmware. The platform integrates with ArduPilot on Copter, Plane and Rover via MAVLink or a custom serial protocol, which is why it appears so often alongside CubePilot autopilots.

Which controller should I choose?

The Regular version covers most builds. Choose Tiny if space is tight, Extended or Pro if you need encoder support and the advanced firmware features, OEM if you are embedding the controller into your own board, and CAN_MCU if you are using external CAN motor drivers.

Do I need one IMU or two?

One IMU on the camera platform is the minimum. A second IMU on the frame lets the controller distinguish platform motion from camera motion, which matters on UAVs and vehicles. For airborne use, two is the practical choice.

Are encoders worth it?

For professional work, yes. Encoders give absolute position feedback, which removes calibration drift, allows recovery from physical disturbance and improves precision near the gimbal limits. They require a controller that supports them.

Does SimpleBGC work with ArduPilot and PX4?

Yes. SimpleBGC communicates with ArduPilot on Copter, Plane and Rover using MAVLink or a custom serial protocol.
